Ice beers evolved out of a fusion of technology, tradition and marketing. The minor tradition of "ice" beers of Germany were blended with a tradition of higher alcohol malt liquors in North America and launched into a new life with the modern technology of precise control of very cold temperatures.
Like a balance to the growth of lower alcohol "light"alternatives, the "dry" and "ice" beer phenomona offered smooth flavour, with alcohols above the average 4.5 to 5.0 % vol..
The evolving beer market showed a great desire for smoother, sweeter, lighter flavours but some consumers asked why this was only available in beers with reduced alcohol volumes.
Several years on from their introduction, several brands of "dry" and "ice'" beer continue to perform as significant brands in their marketplaces today.
The flavour focus of most "dry" and "ice" beers is akin to most "light" lagers; crisp, clean and very smooth. Aroma more prominent than aftertaste. 1054
