The North American Bitter ales rely heavily upon the traditions of England. Historically, the focus on prohibition and then on the developing lager market prevented most North American B24brewers from the development of a bitter until the emergence of "micros".
This English heritage is a base, but not often seen as a defining restriction for brewers large or small in today's North America.
A micro "bitter" will show some solid maltiness and adhere to the concept of displaying plenty of hop aroma.
The "bitter" ales of North America range from quite pale gold to dark burnt red; with bitterness that it often above the norm seen in English bitters.
This style is the beer of the brewpub - or the English style pub at least. This version is medium dark with a decent after-bitter and plenty of fresh hop aroma.
