Red ales largely disappeared from Canadian brewing while the pendulum of brewery contraction was in full swing. Then, during the 1980's, people's tastes swung back towards these invigorating malty ales.
Since the Canadian breweries never ceased brewing beers fermented with (often ancient) strains of ale yeast, this beer style was a natural fit. Brewers large and small jumped back into the brewing of red ales..
The range of Canadian red ale flavours cross the spectrum of English and Celtic brewing traditions; some with the dark malt smokiness of Irish ales and some with caramel malt focus, but all immensely drinkable.
North American style ales are typically quite drinkable and, building on this, the red ales display an upweighted specialty malt impact and crisp hoppiness.
This Canadian strong red ale shows a smooth maltiness up front, with a rich alcohol building up to a fine hop afterbitter - a great pub pint. 1054
